Sweden’s New Night Trains
A new era for sleeper trains
A new standard for compact, flexible and private rail travel
LundbergDesign has, in collaboration with Trafikverket and Talgo, developed a new generation of night train interiors for Sweden. At the core of this project is the Single Cabin — an innovative solution designed to redefine comfort, privacy and efficiency for solo travelers.
Rethinking compact train cabin design
Designing for night trains means working within extremely limited space while meeting complex passenger needs. The challenge was clear: create a cabin that supports sleeping, working, relaxing and luggage storage — all within a highly compact footprint.
A key objective was to significantly improve space efficiency. The new layout makes it possible to fit two Single Cabins within the footprint traditionally occupied by one conventional compartment, without compromising comfort or usability. This represents a major step forward in modern train interior design.
Seamless transition between day and night travel
The Single Cabin is designed to adapt effortlessly between day and night configurations. During the day, the space supports working, sitting and relaxing. At night, it transforms smoothly into a full sleeping environment.
This intuitive transformation is central to the passenger experience — eliminating friction and making the cabin easy to use, regardless of travel duration.
Passenger comfort and privacy at the core
Passenger comfort has guided every design decision. The cabin features a full-length bed (minimum 2 meters), ensuring a proper sleeping experience even for longer journeys.
The ability to fully enclose the cabin creates a private, personal space — allowing passengers to relax, focus, or prepare for the night in complete privacy. This level of individual comfort has long been missing in traditional night train solutions.
Integrated luggage solutions
Unlike conventional train cabins, where luggage is often an afterthought, the Single Cabin integrates generous and accessible storage. Passengers can keep their belongings close, organized and within reach throughout the journey — enhancing both comfort and usability.
A new benchmark for modern rail travel
What began as an idea over two years ago has evolved into a fully realized prototype and a new benchmark for night train design. The Single Cabin demonstrates how thoughtful industrial design can transform even the most constrained spaces into meaningful, high-quality user experiences.
